I feel there is so much that differs in Sifu Lee's wingchun, his approach, philosophy and energy are nothing like any other wingchun I've seen. Truly uses both internal and external principles and displays more knowledge on the art than any one else.
Absolutely Richard totally agree and very well said .. his knowledge to me seems boundless - I was talking with him this morning and last night and we were discussing Chum Kil and it just reminded me how his knowledge of the Art seems to be boundless
My journey and observations so far. Sifu Joseph Lee has documented most of the Lee Shing ‘s teachings but they are written in Traditional Chinese Characters ( cello-taped A4 sheets) I even took the time to learn Chinese to read and write so nothing would be lost in translation. There is no outside influence all the forms are exactly how he was taught by Lee Shing. One of the things I’m hearing is that Ip Man did omit a lot of things and withheld a lot of information because he deemed it necessary. You can see this from his direct students such as Duncan Leung, Ip Chun, Wong Sheung Leung all have different interpretations of what was taught to them Sifu use to ask me a lot of questions about Hong Kong the big names of all the Wing Chun guys here how and what they were teaching. My time with Sifu is just being like in a Ip Man movie, having his attention going to his place and the no frills and simple life style he has, there is no need to come to Hong Kong as it’s a authentic as it can be Student/Teacher relationship and a skill being passed down the generations. Sifu’s is very traditional and even had me Bai Si to him. (Bai Si 拜師 for those who want to google what this is ) clip here for those interested https://youtu.be/Yvv-yw_gaXMObviously I speak to Sifu’s in Cantonese as he is more comfortable with that. One thing that I wanted to share with the group when I first started with Sifu Joseph Lee we had no idea that we were from the same ancestral part of Hong Kong and both are part of a nomadic clan called Hakka (客家) meaning we have our own unique dialect to communicate it was only when he realised this he began to open up even more. Sifu still rings me regularly to almost every couple of days to see how I’m getting on in Hong Kong and how many people I’m currently teaching. Please feel free to ask any questions!
Hi Michael, thanks for the information. Interesting point regarding the traditional dances.I wasn't suggesting that wing chun is a Hakka art, just that I find the the Hakka arts of southern China really interesting and unique. However you are absolutely right that wing chuns short stance & short bridge have a very Hakka flavour.
This style is so beautiful and broad. It really needs to be documented before it dies out. How many truly know as much as Sifu Joseph? More frightening is did Lee shing know even more and that knowledge is already lost?
Mark that’s a great observation and I agree wholeheartedly.. I am doing all that I can to document, record and spread the knowledge passed down to me through Joseph Lee to you and all my students- it truly is a blessed legacy- as Sifu often reminds me .. I won the lottery when I met him
The knowledge of Gulau Wing Chun the older style of Chinese Wing Chun and use of circular power and long bridge js very different and unique compared to the modern “Yip Man” Hong Kong Wing Chun that has been popularised since the 1970s by the advent of the icon and Hollywood super star Bruce Lee.Joseph Lees style or dare I say system stems from a time before Hong Kong and which has its roots firmly planted in the tradition of snake and crane and Shaolin 5 animals ( Shaolin Buddha Fist ) the flow and bridging is loose and heavy - power from the ground back to the ground.
